Why is Egyptian Cotton regarded as the best?
Grown on the lush banks of the Nile Delta region of Egypt, the cotton harvested has some of the longest natural fibres of any cotton.
These high grade and extremely robust cotton buds are manufactured to produce high quality sheets and duvets covers which are then found in luxury hotels, top end high street department stores and specialist internet bedding retailers.
Why is thread count important?
When buying Egyptian Cotton bed linen, thread count is an important consideration. This is a measure where the threads of the fabric cross over each other creating a grid pattern in a given square inch of fabric. The higher the number of threads the finer and better the yarns are supposed to be. Quality is very important as this will help reduce shrinkage and pilling during the life of the sheets.
Egyptian Cotton Sheets normally have a minimum weave of 200 threads per square inch. This standard is called a percale weave and is considered to be of a much higher quality than cotton used from other countries.
More and more fabrics are now being produced with higher thread counts of 400 up to 1000 threads per square inch. Higher thread count sheets have a sateen finish that is super soft and silky to the touch.
Better quality cotton is also very good at absorbing moisture which will help you stay cool during the summer months. The best cottons are also combed during the weaving process, a light mechanical action that removes more impurities from the raw fibres and it helps the cotton to become lighter and more manageable, which is critical when spinning the superfine yarns.
